Utah Partnership Project

The Utah Partnership Project is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the State of Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) to test The National Map concept for supporting critical transportation data needed in emergency response, census requirements, and other Federal, State, and local governmental functions for an urban county and a rural county in the State. This project, which was focused on a specific data theme, was one of the initial pilot projects in the development for The National Map. This project demonstrated the utility and ability of The National Map to meet a real, critical need in preventing or reducing loss of life and property damage related to emergency response. Project objectives are to develop and integrate transportation datasets, develop and test a process for updating and maintaining transportation data, and develop and test software for interfacing and serving transportation information over the Web, including the development of derivative products and capabilities. This project directly benefits Utah by encouraging the use of locally generated data that are the best available, fostering improvements in the accuracy of census data, and providing a model that relies on increased coordination between Federal, State, and local agencies. Additionally, the U.S. Census Bureau will use this up-to-date transportation dataset as part of its modernization program in preparation for the 2010 census.
