The Lake Tahoe Area Partnership Project was one of the very first pilot projects for The National Map. This project involves the challenges and opportunities of integrating data across two States, eight counties, and several cities. The project builds on the Federal coordination and research being done under an Executive Order following the 1997 Lake Tahoe Presidential Forum. The primary focus of the partnership project is obtaining and integrating local and Federal datasets. Issues being explored include the integration of Federal and local data, the use of volunteer groups for updating datasets, the establishment of data stewards, and collaboration with California on its statewide vision for framework data development and distribution. The USGS is working with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to apply the partnership project as the geographic underpinning to the Tahoe Integrated Information Management System, which will provide public access to a range of area environmental information. This project demonstrates the application of The National Map as a foundation for integrating, sharing, and using other data easily and consistently.
Strong ties across the California and Nevada State line unite the Lake Tahoe Area Partnership Project study area into a cohesive cultural and economic region. In defining the project boundaries, area agencies have specified that the project must include the Tahoe Basin, major watersheds around the basin, and the trade corridor that spans from Reno through Minden, Nevada, south to the Markleeville, California, area. The Sierra Nevada crest line represents both the watershed and the regional boundary to the west. County and 7.5-minute quadrangle boundaries define the remaining project limits.
