Oil exploration and development are important national and local activities that are occurring in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPRA). To meet current and future planning and management needs in the NPRA, up-to-date base materials are needed. Current USGS topographic maps are more than 40 years old and do not meet national map accuracy standards, and no aerial photography is available to meet current 1:24,000-scale objectives. In addition, there are no high-resolution, up-to-date digital elevation models (DEMs) that are needed for ortho-corrections to any new photography if it were available. To meet these planning and management needs, this project was initiated to produce new digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQs) to replace the outdated topographic maps. Activities in fiscal year 2003 included 1.) a data and needs assessment conducted at four USGS Geography centers, 2.) the award of contracts for the collection and processing of InterFerometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) for the production of DEMs, and 3.) contract awards for the acquisition of aerial photography for DOQ production. In addition, a new memorandum of understanding with the Bureau of Land Management allows interagency funding for future project work.
